Overview
Naled is an organophosphate insecticide first registered for use as an "adulticide insecticide" in 1959 primarily to control adult mosquitoes (#EPA Pesticides - Mosquito Control, 2007). Naled breaks down into dichlorvos in both animals and in the environment and has many health effects, both chronic and acute (#Cox, 2002).

Naled is an organophosphate cholinesterase inhibitor.
Contains petroleum distillates.
Measurement of blood cholinesterase activity may be useful in monitoring exposure. If signs of cholinesterase inhibition appear, atropine sulfate is antidotal. 2- PAM (Protopam) is also antidotal and may be used in conjunction with atropine, but should not be used alone. Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage. May pose an aspiration pneumonia hazard.

The link between benzene and cancer has largely focused on leukemia and other cancers of blood cells.
Breathing in high doses of benzene can affect the nervous system, which can lead to drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, tremors, confusion, and/or unconsciousness. Consuming foods or fluids contaminated with high levels of benzene can cause vomiting, stomach irritation, dizziness, sleepiness, convulsions, and rapid heart rate. In extreme cases, inhaling or swallowing very high levels of benzene can be deadly.

On Wednesday, October 13, 1999, in Orlando, Florida at the Holiday Inn International Drive Resort, located at 6515 International Drive, Orlando, FL 32819, Telephone 407-351-3500. The USEPA will hold a public meeting, in the Amelia room at 9:00 EDT to present the revised risk assessment for 3 organophosphate pesticides, Fenthion, Naled and Temephos to interested stakeholders. This public meeting called a Stakeholders Briefing, is designed to provide the parties with an opportunity to become even more informed about an organophosphates risk assessment. EPA will describe in detail the revised risk assessment: including the major points (e.g. contributors to risk estimates), how public comment on the preliminary risk assessment affected the revised risk assessment, and the pesticide use information/data that was used in developing the revised risk assessment. Stakeholders will have an opportunity to ask clarifying questions. In addition, representatives of the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will also provide ideas on possible risk management for these products. 

​The stakeholders meeting is part of the pilot public participation process that EPA and USDA are now using for involving the public in the reassessment of pesticide tolerances under the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA), and the reregistration of individual organophosphate pesticides under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). The pilot public participation process was developed as a part of the EPA-USDA Tolerance Reassessment Advisory Committee (TRAC), which was established in April 1998 as a subcommittee under the auspices of EPAs National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology. A goal of the pilot public participation is to find a more effective way for the public to participate at critical junctures in the Agencys development of organophosphate risk assessment and risk management decisions. EPA and USDA began implementing this pilot process in August 1998 in response to Vice President Gores directive to increase transparency and opportunities for stakeholder consultation. 
​As you are well aware, the Food Quality Protection Act, 1996 (FQPA) has mandated a review of the benefits and risks of all our public health pesticide products with particular attention devoted to the subpopulation groups - infants and children. Currently, there are 39 different organophosphates traveling through the pilot process at EPA. Accordingly, they must review the benefits and risks associated with the usage and handling of each public health pesticide active ingredient. Out of these 39A.I.s, there are three public health pesticide products associated with this group - Fenthion (Baytex), Naled (Dibrom) and Temephos (Abate). During the course of this one day meeting EPA will bring the September/October 1999 significant individuals from each of their respective branches- Health and Effects Division (HED), Environmental Fate and Effects Division (EFED) and Biological and Economic Analysis Division (BEAD) and Special Review and Reregistration Division (SRRD) who have promulgated these benefits and risks assessments. Presentations will be made by each of the groups germane to their part of the discussion. Importantly, there will be dedicated time for public comment regarding their recommendations . This will be the appropriate time for all of the stakeholders, whether you are representing a mosquito control district, registrant or other related government official to speak you piece. Chris Lesser from Manatee County Mosquito Control District (MCMCD) states that they have hired a 3rd pilot, John Bautista. John hails from Minnesota and comes with extensive experience in mosquito control. MCMCD is once again partnering with UF/FMEL on a study evaluating the insect-community impacts of aerial naled spraying. This study evaluates 8 insect community structure, size, diversity and relative overall population in "treatment" vs. "control” areas. MCMCD is also continuing field research on developing BMP for control of Ae. aegypti/Ae. albopictus populations. Research is focused on adulticide applications although some larvicide work has also been completed.

Citrus County Mosquito District is still keeping sharp on being proactive for the possible appearance of dengue or chikungunya. They have had another meeting of neighboring counties. They having been covering more points on cross county line work, responsibilities, and the legal aspects of property access.
